4 Common Myths About Learning English

Myths about the English language are often heard from individuals who lack in-depth knowledge of language learning. Many of these misconceptions gradually get corrected for those studying English at higher levels in institutes or universities. However, beginner and intermediate learners, as well as those with limited knowledge of English, often hold some of these false beliefs.

In this article, we aim to dispel the myths about the English language and present facts about learning English that can help you on your language learning journey.

1. If I read the 504 book, my speaking will improve

One of the common misconceptions about learning English is related to the 504 Vocabulary book. It could be said that over 90% of people who wish to learn English own a 504 book in their library. A common belief is that those who want to learn English and speak the language should first purchase the 504 book and start reading. The problem, however, is that most of the vocabulary in this book is not suitable for everyday conversation. This book is typically studied by those preparing for various English proficiency exams. But reading this book is not a suitable method for starting to learn English conversation. Moreover, 504 is an outdated book, and some of its words are no longer in use. Currently, much better books for IELTS and other exams are recommended by instructors.

2. People will mock my accent

Since English is an international language, having an American or British accent no longer holds the same importance it once did. People around the world have accepted English as a common language, regardless of the accent. Naturally, the accent with which people speak English depends on their native language. For instance, you can usually tell someone’s origin by their accent when native speakers of Hindi, Chinese, French, or Persian speak English.

Contrary to common misconceptions about English, these non-native accents are completely acceptable, and native English speakers will not judge them. In fact, if you speak with a non-native accent during the IELTS exam, you can still achieve a perfect score, provided your vocabulary, grammar, expressions, and pronunciation are correct. Accent does not affect your score. What really matters is pronunciation: if words are pronounced incorrectly, the meaning may be miscommunicated, or the listener might not understand you at all. So, rather than worrying about your accent, focus your time on correct pronunciation.

3. Their language is perfect

You might have often heard the phrase, “So-and-so’s language is perfect.” However, the issue here is that “perfect language” doesn’t actually exist. It is possible to assess someone’s level in different skills of the English language, but saying that someone’s language is “perfect” is meaningless, because there is no clear boundary for “perfect” language, and it doesn’t really hold any meaning.

Of course, in the IELTS exam, a native speaker’s speaking ability is assessed at the highest possible level (a score of 9), but even for native speakers, this concept doesn’t apply. In the English dictionary, there is a vast array of terminology and phrases in different fields that no one can claim to know and use perfectly—not even native speakers!

These myths and misconceptions can be barriers to learning, but by understanding the truth, you can approach your English language learning journey with a clearer and more realistic perspective.
